Vicki Smith Obituary

Vicki Spiro Smith
07/31/2023
Vicki Spiro Smith will be greatly missed by her beloved husband of 55 years, Geoffrey Smith, her sons David Smith (wife Lori Bibb) and Daniel Smith (wife Brooke Smith) and cherished grandchildren Walker Smith, Campbell Smith, and Ramona Smith. She leaves behind two sisters, Beverly Spiro, Shandel Gilbert, and a brother, Joel Spiro.
As a social worker, she focused on promoting mental health via educational programs throughout Connecticut and worked at the local, state, and federal levels as an advocate for better services for those with mental health needs. Her career included Director of Public Education for the Mental Health Association of CT, Executive Director of the Southwest Regional Mental Health Board, and Coordinator of Adult Programs for the Consultation Center at Yale University. She was also the Coordinator of the Connecticut Self-Help/Mutual Support Network, which connected those with similar issues and challenges to one another for support and information. Her proudest professional achievement was developing this statewide program.
Vicki loved all things in nature, and was an avid birder. One of her favorite activities was spotting migrating and nesting birds on walks with her husband along the Connecticut shoreline. She found joy and serenity in gardening, spending many seasons growing an array of fresh vegetables for her family.
Vicki was an explorer who sought out adventure, having visited several continents, and fulfilled a lifelong dream by journeying with her husband to the Galapagos Islands later in her life.
She was a citizen of the world, graciously welcoming foreign students attending local colleges and universities into her home for meals and camaraderie, and helping them develop their conversational English language skills.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in Vicki's memory.

Such sad news. Vicki was quite a presence at Wightman and at Hebrew School, where we carpooled together. I had lost touch with her, and was gratified to read she had such a fulfilling and meaningful life. I'm not surprised, as she was always warm, outgoing, and kind. My condolences to her entire family. Truly, her memory will be a blessing for them and those who knew her.

Question: Did Vicki graduate from TAHS? I know we have people in the group (Marshall Goldberg and Alan MacLaine to name just two) who didn't and who I believe are rightfully members, so I'm just seeking a clarification. My recollection is that Vicki and her younger sister Beverly both graduated from Ellis or Winchester-Thurston.

Vicki's picture is in the yearbook (p. 83). She is in the graduation program (shown in the Photos and Videos section).

I remember Vicki fondly from Wightman and from Allderdice.
