Sam was the jv center when I was the jv quarterback. I had my hands up his ass for the whole of the fall of 1962. I was as close to him as could be. Because of that, or in spite of it, we were friends. Neither of us was very good, but it seemed not to trouble him much. He just loved to play the game.

Sam was someone who would make you a better person by just knowing him.  He could always make one of those bad high school days better. He was a good friend to me.

1964... Wightman Field... Fraternity Softball Championship.  Last inning... Tying and winning runs on base... Two out.  Ball whacked.  High. Deep.  Left field.  Pearlman, back, back, back. Pearlman climbs killer hill. Stumbles. Falls. Disappears into weeds. Glove arm stretches over head.  Ball squeezes into mitt. Good guys win.  Greatest big catch field-rats have ever seen.  Tested now, 50 years. Just a few of us still see his glory.  Others who knew him can never forget Sam.. the man.
